The Stark County District Library is seeking a maintenance professional to fill a Maintenance 1 position within our Facilities Department. Successful candidates will provide custodial support to library system locations. We are looking for candidates who understand the importance of our mission, as well as keeping our library patrons as a top priority. 

The Maintenance 1 position is a part-time (20 hours/week), non-exempt, bargaining unit position, reporting to the Facilities Managers.  Compensation includes a starting hourly rate of $10 and a competitive benefits package.

Position Description

An employee in this position advances the mission of the Library by performing routine custodial and maintenance tasks in assigned areas of library buildings and grounds.  This work includes delivery of materials and supplies to library facilities. Detailed instructions are given during the initial stages of employment, but after learning proper procedures, employees work with independence.   Work is performed under the general supervision of the Facilities Director or other designated supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates superior seamless customer service, integrity, and commitment to innovation, efficiency and fiscally responsible activity;
  • Demonstrates commitment to STAR values in all interactions with customers, community residents and colleagues; (Service, Teamwork, Adaptability, Respect);
  • Vacuums, sweeps and mops floors, including public hallways and department offices, meeting rooms, and restrooms;
  • Cleans, dusts and polishes furniture, equipment, fixtures, surfaces, walls,  window sills, trim, doors, cabinets, vents, or other surfaces: cleans office equipment, tables, and telephones; washes/cleans glass doors, windows, and blinds;
  • Cleans and sanitizes restroom areas, including toilets, sinks, mirrors, privacy dividers, walls and floor areas;
  • Maintains supply levels in restrooms, including toilet paper, paper towels, and soap;
  • Empties and cleans trash containers, including transporting bagged waste to outside trash receptacles;
  • Cleans light fixtures and replaces bulbs;
  • Assists with stripping and waxing floors and shampooing carpet;
  • Cleans spills, spot cleans carpets, and removes graffiti as needed;
  • Maintains exterior areas around buildings as needed, which may include sweeping mats or walkways, hosing sidewalks and entryways, emptying ashtrays/urns, or picking up and disposing of debris/litter, clearing snow and ice;
  • Utilizes library alarm systems and alarm codes as authorized and in a manner that consistently protects library facilities and property;
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance;
  • Works a flexible schedule including nights and weekends;
  • May deliver materials, supplies, and other needed items to library facilities and other destinations as assigned;
  • May perform all duties related to the receipt and shipping of mail and other library materials;
  • Performs general tasks associated with work activities as needed, which may include moving furniture/equipment, assembling equipment, setting up rooms for meetings/events, folding/stacking tables and chairs, or loading/unloading materials; and
  • This position will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending on the work location, assignment or shift.

Selection Factors

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, materials, tools and standard practices of cleaning and maintaining public buildings;
  • Preparation, use, and disposal of chemical cleaning agents;
  • Appropriate use of cleaning agent for varied surface types;
  • Proper use of ladders, dollies and carts; and
  • Safety procedures when cleaning and moving furniture.

Ability to:

  • Demonstrate technology proficiency at the basic level;
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance, observing a flexible schedule including nights and weekends as assigned;
  • Communicate effectively with the public and other employees;
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions in the English language;
  • Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation, which takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting;
  • Organize, prioritize and pace duties and tasks for up to an eight-hour shift;
  • Work cooperatively with other staff members and the general public.
  • Work independently or with minimal supervision at a remote site; and
  • Adapt to changing work priorities.

Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or GED equivalency required.  One year or more of custodial experience is desirable. Possession of, or ability to obtain, an Ohio driver’s license is required.  Must maintain a driving record that is satisfactory to the Library’s liability insurance carrier. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

Physical Requirements

  • The library environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of offices, which includes the need for general safe workplace practices with office equipment and computers, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire regulations;
  • Work requires accessing areas for the structural maintenance and inspection of the facilities, including but not limited to rooms containing mechanical and electrical equipment, roofs and rooftop mechanical areas;
  • Work requires the use of ladders, chemical solutions and a variety of maintenance-related equipment;
  • Work requires extensive walking, light to moderate physical effort  such as stooping and bending,  climbing and occasional lifting of objects, up to 50 pounds, and pushing wheeled carts weighing up to 400 pounds; and
  • Exposure to the full range of inclement weather conditions common to Northeast Ohio.

Stark County District Library serves over 105,000 active cardholders, annually circulating 3.85 million items from its 1.4 million item collection and   providing access to an additional 66 million items from lending networks throughout Ohio.  Each year the library presents more than 9,000 programs for 170,000 attendees and provides 260,000 computer sessions on the publicly available computers found in each branch.  The system consists of ten branches, including our main library, as well as a mobile services department.
