Stark County District Library is seeking an experienced Communication Director to lead library’s comprehensive communication strategy – including the areas of branding, marketing, public relations, digital presence, internal communication, and crisis communication. The successful candidate will be a hands-on professional who enjoys rolling up his or her sleeves and working with their team to develop strategies, achieve organizational goals, and increase patron satisfaction.

The Communication Director is a full-time (40 hours/week), exempt, administrative position, reporting to the Director of Organizational Effectiveness and Strategic Initiatives.  Compensation includes a competitive salary commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and a generous benefits package.

This position advances the mission of the Library by directing the Communication Department and is responsible for the development and implementation of the library’s comprehensive communication strategy – including the areas of branding, marketing, public relations, digital presence, internal communication, and crisis communication.  The mission of this department is to tell the library’s story – increasing public awareness of the library’s offerings and its value to the community – and, ultimately, to increase the number of active library users.

This employee has considerable latitude in the application of professional practices in the assigned area of responsibility.  This employee is accountable to and works collaboratively with the Director of Organizational Effectiveness and Strategic Initiatives (DOE).


  • Works with DOE to set high-level communications strategies and objectives for the Communications department that are necessary to accomplish the      library’s mission and goals
  • Oversees the planning, implementation, and evaluation of all communications strategies, projects and campaigns
  • Oversees the implementation of the library’s SmartStore brand – ensuring a coherent voice, look, and message is consistently applied in all communication      materials, library buildings, and throughout the organization
  • Leads the execution of an aggressive growth strategy for digital communication by evaluating and implementing emerging technologies from both inside and outside the library industry that increase communications and marketing effectiveness
  • Oversees the specification, contracting, monitoring and evaluation of professional services vendors
    • Serve as a spokesperson for the Library in media interactions and in other public forums as appropriate; exercise judgment in prioritizing media opportunities, and prepare talking points, speeches and presentations as needed
    • Actively engages, cultivates and manages positive relationships with local media representatives and community contacts.
    • Educates and directs staff in marketing and communication concepts as necessary to achieve Library objectives
    • Serves as a member of the Administrative Team and confers with other library administrators on issues of common interest
      • Acts as a communications advisor to Library leadership; Identifies challenges and emerging issues faced by the Library; advises leadership of internal and external communication opportunities; defines and executes appropriate strategies to leverage them.
  • Responsible for Communication department structure, job descriptions, staffing, performance management and hiring (directly or delegated where      appropriate).
  • Prepares operations budgets and capital project proposals; manages and administers allocated funds
  • Develops and tracks key metrics for the utilization of systems, staff, and resources; provides timely reporting to internal and external stakeholders; ensures strategic capacity planning
  • Analyzes and advises on the communication requirements of other departments, identifying strategies and resources necessary to meet departmental      objectives
  • Demonstrates superior seamless customer service, integrity, and commitment to innovation, efficiency, and fiscally responsible activity;
  • Represents the library in the industry and community by making presentations and serving on boards and committees
  • Seeks opportunities to promote the Library and enhance the Library’s visibility as a vital community partner
  • Works Monday through Friday, but observes a flexible schedule – including evenings and weekends -- when necessary for special events or other needs. This      position regularly requires more than forty hours in a workweek without additional compensation to perform assigned job duties and may be “on call” any time for emergency response.


Education and Experience

A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations or related field with at least five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience.

Other combinations of experience and education may be substituted, should the candidate demonstrate the ability to meet the necessary selection factors and qualifications.

Minimum Requirements

  • Proven experience as a communication director, creative director, marketing manager, or similar role
  • Experience in planning and managing budgets
  • Exemplary written and verbal communication skills
  • A strong strategic thinking and big-picture mindset
    • Excellent time, task, and project management skills
    • Experience hiring, training, developing, supervising and evaluating personnel

 Preferred Requirements

  • Demonstrated leadership and success in managing strategic marketing for a non-profit organization
  • Experience and interest in public speaking
  • Knowledge of Stark County and familiarity with its various educational, arts, and community service organizations
  • Experience overseeing the design and production of print materials and publications

 Additional Requirements

  • Position requires the use of personal vehicles. Individual must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record.
  • Position may require the performance of other essential and marginal functions.

 Physical Requirements

  • The library environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of offices, which includes the need for general safe workplace practices with office equipment and computers, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire regulations
  • Lift light objects (less than 20 pounds) and carry them short distances (20 feet or less)
  • Remain in a standing or seated position for extended periods of time while performing a variety of tasks
  • Perform repetitive hand, arm, and body movements, which may include lifting books on a continuous basis for up to an eight-hour shift.
