The New Jackson Township Branch

The new Stark Library branch, part of the Jackson North Park, will include many features that our patrons and the community have told us are important to them.

Progress continues on the Stark Library branch in Jackson Township:

  • December
    • Stark Library and Jackson Township Trustees signed a lease agreement for the property at North Park.
    • Stark Library Board of Trustees held a special meeting to discuss the ground preparatory work for the new Jackson Branch building. The Board passed a resolution to amend our contract with the Jackson Trustees allowing us to partner with the Trustees to dry the soil at the work site, enabling our contractor to begin construction on the new branch in the spring of 2019.
  • November:
    • On November 20, the Stark Library Board of Trustees selected Fred Olivieri Construction Company, of North Canton, for construction of the Jackson Township Branch.

Fred Olivieri Construction Company has nearly 60 years of extensive construction experience with comparable public buildings including Walsh Global Learning Center and Science Center, Zimmerman Symphony Center and Mercy Medical in Jackson. The drawings for the new branch have been finalized and construction can commence when the groundwork is completed.

About the Design

When we met with the Jackson community in preparation for designing their new branch, we listened to what they told us. This beautiful new space, overlooking North Park, incorporates many of these ideas in the design.

The first thing you’ll notice as you walk in the building, is a lobby that is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! Patrons told us that they loved the ability to put items on hold and pick them up in the convenient lockers that are available outside of normal library hours. A Media Box will also be in the lobby, allowing patrons to borrow video games and DVDs.

As you walk in the door, you’ll be greeted by a stunning open space, filled with books and materials and plenty of areas that you can relax and read or visit with your friends – with a backdrop of floor to ceiling windows overlooking North Park. The lower shelving allows for a full view of the entire library and displays will feature new books and other items. A variety of flexible meeting spaces are easily accessible for groups and individuals and can accommodate small study groups or large meetings. There’s even a  multipurpose room in the children’s area with an easy-to-clean floor so kids can be kids!

One of the best things about the space is its flexibility. The furniture and many of the other pieces are movable to easily accommodate children’s story times, casual group meetings, or individuals. Laptop vending machines allow patrons to grab a laptop and sit wherever they’d like in the library – even near the beautiful fireplace. For those who bring their own devices, charging stations will be available throughout the space.

A Library Inspired by You

In January, HBM hosted community focus groups to gather the community’s feedback on their vision for the future of the Jackson library. View the results of this intensive brainstorming session in the Visioning Book that is inspiring our design process.

Why Change?

In 2016, an engineering study revealed extensive water damage to the shell of the original Jackson Township branch. Surprisingly, we found it would ultimately more efficient to build an entirely new branch than to repair and renovate the old building.

To ensure uninterrupted service to the Jackson community, an interim branch location was established in The Marketplace at Nobles Pond. This storefront location serves as an incubator space to test many of the new technologies, features, and services the library plans to introduce system-wide.
