Library Kicks Off Gardening Season with New Eco-Fair

February 23, 2017 (Canton, Ohio) –Stark County District Library kicks off the gardening season with the debut of the new Eco-Fair on March 4 at the Main Library. From 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., visitors can explore a variety of exhibitors and attend free presentations on a range of topics including raising chickens, gardening, soil enrichment, beekeeping, canning, trees and more from sustainability experts.

Exhibitors include Stark County Arbor Day and Tree Planting, The Wildlife Care Center at Fichtner Park, the “Animal Attic” Spay and Neuter Assistance Program, Stark County Master Gardener Volunteers, and more. The Eco-Fair also marks the return of the popular Heirloom Seed Bank, the free non-GMO seed sharing program, for its fourth season.

The Eco-Fair will feature free presentations from sustainability experts in the Main Library’s Innovation Center including:
9 a.m. – Wildlife Care and Animal Guest with Vanessa Shanower of Stark Parks
9:30 a.m. – Vegetable Gardening with Fred Hanacek, Master Gardener
10:30 a.m. — The Difference Between Soil and Dirt with Jeanne Poremski, Master Gardener
11 a.m. — Basic Canning with Kate Shumaker, OSU Extension Educator
12:30 p.m. — Raising Chickens in Urban Settings with Cindy Pettiti of Pettiti Nursery
1:30 p.m. — Creating Pollinator Habitats with Michele Colopy, Director of Ohio Pollinator Stewardship
2:30 p.m. — Raising Honey Bees with Ohio Pollinator Stewardship

Registration is requested for the presentations due to limited seating.

“There’s always great interest in our gardening and sustainability programs so we’re very excited to introduce the new Eco-Fair,” said Marianna DiGiacomo, Director of Community Services. “We’re excited to bring free learning opportunities like this to the community. It’s another way we serve Stark County as The Smart Store®.”
