BikeSmart Surpasses 11,000 Rides in Fourth Season

October 23, 2018 (Canton, Ohio) – BikeSmart, Stark County’s bike sharing network, has passed a milestone 10,000 rides in its fourth season.
As of October 2019, the network had been used for more than 11,000 rides by 2,490 active members. Participants are using the bikes for recreational rides, running errands, and transportation to appointments.

Derek Gordon, head of the BikeSmart committee, is delighted with the community interest in BikeSmart. “When we first launched BikeSmart, we knew it was unique in the world of bike sharing networks in that it allows library patrons over the age of 18 to borrow a bike for free with their library card. It is the first of its kind in the county. Watching the program grow over the past four years has been amazing.”

The program is a collaboration between the Library, Stark Parks, and Canton Parks and Rec. BikeSmart won the Ohio Parks and Recreation Association (OPRA) Award for Management Innovation and the Ohio Library Council (OLC) Innovation Award.

“BikeSmart connects residents of Stark County with the places that they need to go,” said Gordon. “The more hubs we have, the better connected our county will be. We are hoping to expand the program for 2019 and are actively seeking new partners to help us do so.”

BikeSmart launched in June of 2015 as the area’s first bike lending program, featuring 36 bikes at six hubs throughout the county. In 2016, the program underwent a complete upgrade and expansion of the system. The upgrade included new bikes, racks, and locks as well as upgrades to the mobile app to make it even easier to use. It has since grown to 8 hubs with 48 bikes, which are strategically positioned in areas where paths or bike lanes are nearby:
