Are you a devoted reader? An aspiring author? Or do you just love meeting famous authors?
If you’ve checked your mailbox recently, you probably found your fall Explore Guide with a list of events and cool things you can do with your library card. One of those awesome things you can do is check out one of our great fall author events— live and in-person!
Yes, after a long hiatus, we will be partnering with the community to (safely) bring you two exciting guest authors—equity expert and Principal Baruti Kafele and food journalist and columnist Mark Bittman.
Some of our past guest authors include horror master RL Stine, astronaut and adventurer Mike Massimino, football legend Bernie Kosar, kids’ author and musician Jim Gill, and award-winning poet Kwame Alexander. We’re thrilled to add Mark Bittman and Principal Kafele to our list.
We’re so excited to welcome you back in person! Keep reading to learn more about our guests.
We will be kicking off the return of our Dr. Audrey Lavin Speaking of Books Author Series and celebrating downtown Canton’s Restaurant Week with author Mark Bittman, on September 23 at 6:30 pm at the Canton Palace Theatre.
Mark was a food journalist and columnist, opinion columnist, and the lead magazine food writer at the New York Times. He starred in four television series and has made hundreds of television, radio, and podcast appearances, including Jimmy Kimmel Live!, RealTime with Bill Maher, and CBS’s The Dish. He has also appeared on NPR’s All Things Considered, Fresh Air, and Morning Edition.
His book, VB6: Eat Vegan Before 6:00 to Lose Weight and Restore Your Health . . . for Good teaches us we can live healthier, not just eat healthier, when you eat with eyes wide open. It also encourages us to discover a flexible, ethical way of eating better to improve your health and lose weight by using common sense in the kitchen.
Later in the fall “Arthur” creator Marc Brown will join the Speaking of Books lineup.
Principal Baruti Kafele
On September 21, equity expert and Principal Baruti Kafele joins us at Umstattd Performing Arts Hall at 6:30 pm.
One of the most sought-after school leadership experts and education presenters in America, Kafele is impacting America’s schools with truth, a demand for meaningful reflection upon current practice, and a challenge for change to ensure that all students are achieving at high levels. He will share his insights about what schools, families, students, and the community can do to improve student outcomes. His visit is presented by Canton City School District in partnership with Stark Library, Stark Education Partnership, State Support Team Region 9, and Dismantling Racism Coalition of Stark County.
His book, The Equity and Social Justice Education discusses the critical role teachers play in student success. It ensures that all students are seen, sheds light on the issues and challenges of inequity in the classroom, and provides a pathway to infusing social justice education into lesson plans.
We love welcoming authors of all genres. There’s something for every interest, age, and genre—mystery, thriller, literary fiction, sci-fi, autobiography, sports, romance, and more!
